Overview

What is the QCTO?

The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) oversees occupational qualifications in South Africa. Training providers must be accredited by the QCTO to deliver its occupational certificates.

Occupational vs legacy qualifications

Older SETA-registered qualifications (legacy qualifications) are being replaced by QCTO occupational qualifications. Each legacy qualification has a last date for new enrolments, after which learners enrol on the occupational replacement.

Occupational qualifications are built from three parts: knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience, so learners finish ready for a specific occupation.

What it means for employers

Learnerships on QCTO occupational qualifications count toward the Skills Development element of your B-BBEE scorecard, and future-proof your programme as legacy qualifications are phased out. Ask us which qualification fits each role.
